Shetland Islands - Wrapped in Warmth - Shetland Hap Shawls

Not all Shetland shawls are knit from skinny yarn and can pass through a wedding ring. While we love those that do, the traditional Shetland Hap Shawl is generally knit in fingering weight yarn in the natural colors of true Shetland bred sheep. We'll discuss traditional techniques and color placement in class and work on a swatch to learn the basics of modern Half Hap Shawl construction.

Supplies
: Size 5US or 6US circular needle(s) in both 24 and 32 inch length (or interchangeable cords). 100-200 yards of 3 to 5 solid-colored fingering-weight non-superwash wool yarns; one as your main color (MC) and others to coordinate. .Stitch markers and the usual knitting notions. Colored pencils or crayons in shades representing your swatch colors. Instructor will supply graph paper.

Homework: With MC, knit a triangle shape beginning with one stitch, leaving a 6” tail. Increase one stitch EVERY row (front and back) as follows: *YO, knit across to the last stitch, knit into the back of the loop of last stitch*. Turn and repeat until you have 55 stitches on needle. Do not cut or break working yarn.
